MCN- Northern Sweden Soil Remediation Center

Kopmanholmen_011Researchers from MCN Umeå University and consultants from Sweco, Tyréns, and MoRe Research are starting a R&D project to develop remediation strategies and methodologies to handle the specific problems at active industrial sites. The project will be based on field experiments at the Domsjö industry site in Örnsköldsvik. The project which will run during 2009 - 2011, is sponsored jointly by the Kempe foundation and Holmen AB with additional support from Umeå University, Sweco, and Tyréns.

Hanssons_008MCN Director, Professor Mats Tysklind gave a talk in Sundsvall and pointed to the huge number, now up to 12000 in the highest risk classes,  of identified contaminated sites in Sweden, and the unreasonably huge cost the society will face to remediate these based on similar criteria for risk reduction and  technologies as has been applied up till now

MCN was launched and introduced to the Swedish soil remediation industry at the national network meeting (Nätverket Renare Mark)  in Stockholm March 24-25. The meeting which was arranged jointly with Swedish EPA had the theme Sustainable Remediation and drew 450participants.
