Project proposal GLOCOM submitted to the EU FP7 Marie Curie IRSES, received high scores in the evaluation and has been selected for final negotiations with the EU ERA. The project will most likely be awarded and can be expected to start in first quarter of 2011.
University Ca’ Foscari of Venice, Umeå University (MCN), Bejing Normal University and CRAES (China Research Academy of Environmental Science), submitted the proposal GLOCOM (Global Partners in Contaminated Land Management) to the EU FP7 Call People 2010- IRSES in March 2010. GLOCOM is plannned as a 4-year program for exchange of 36 researchers for a total of 188 months, with research to focus on fate of contaminants, risk assessment and management of contaminated sites. MCN director Professor Mats Tysklind is very pleased and excited by the news. - We view GLOCOM as a long-term strategic investment in research collaboration on the management of contaminated sites for China and Europe.

New project in FP7 -ENV awarded to MCN and LTU |

A project proposal named "Gentle remediation of trace element contaminated land (GREENLAND)" was submitted to the FP 7 call 2010: Biotechnology for the environment - Soil and water treatment and bioremediation. The project coordinator is University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria, and LTU is among 18 partners in 10 European countries. The project was selected for negotiation with EU and will start January 2011. The total budget of the project for 4 years is 4 mln Euro. LTU’s share in the project is 200 kEuro. Luleå Univerity of Technology, Jurate Kumpiene at department of Waste Science and Technology will take a role as a leader of a Work Package on "Harmonisation of methods to assess the bioavailability of trace elements and development of tool set to monitor the sustainability of gentle remediation options.

Proposal "GREENER" submitted for FP 7, EU |

12 European partners including partners from MCN submitted on Jan 5th, the proposal GREENER to EU DG Research. GREENER which is short for GReen and lean technologies for Eco-Efficient brownfield regeNERation, is a response to the call for Environmental technologies for brownfield regeneration, FP 7-ENV.2010.3.1.5-2. Participating partners are Umeå University(Coordinator), Luleå University of Technology, Tyréns and MB-Envirotek (SE),SYKE (Finish Environment Institute) and Tampere University of Technology (FI), Dekonta and ICT (CZ), Reconsite (D), Witteveen+Bos and Bioclear (NL), and CVR (Venecian Research Consortium) (I). The proposal will be evaluated and ranked in a stepwise process during the coming months. If awarded, the project is planned to start in August/September this year. |

MCN prepares proposal for EU FP7 call ENV-2010 |

Umeå University and other partners within and outside MCN are preparing a proposal for the ongoing call by EU DG Research. The proposal will adress the topic, ENV.2010.3.1.5-2 Environmental technologies for brownfield regeneration. A first workshop meeting was held with potential partners at the North and Mid-Sweden building in Brussels, on September 18th. Deadline for submission has been set to January 5th 2010. |

MCN held its firsts physical gathering of project leaders and participants of the research projects. The meeting was located at the Umeå Marine Research Center in Norrbyn, south of Umeå, on May 6-7th, and worked on review and planning of all projects and the MCN overall activities.

Project on remediation strategies and methodologies started |

 Researchers from MCN Umeå University and consultants from Sweco, Tyréns, and MoRe Research are starting a R&D project to develop remediation strategies and methodologies to handle the specific problems at active industrial sites. The project will be based on field experiments at the Domsjö industry site in Örnsköldsvik. The project which will run during 2009 - 2011, is sponsored jointly by the Kempe foundation and Holmen AB with additional support from Umeå University, Sweco, and Tyréns.

 MCN Director, Professor Mats Tysklind gave a talk in Sundsvall and pointed to the huge number, now up to 12000 in the highest risk classes, of identified contaminated sites in Sweden, and the unreasonably huge cost the society will face to remediate these based on similar criteria for risk reduction and technologies as has been applied up till now
